The Supermarine Spitfire was developed in the mid-1930s as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft. Only one prototype was built and was in service 1936-1939. -

About 1500 copies of the Mk I were built. -

Only two Supermarine PR I were built and were later converted in PR III. -

About 900 Mk II were built from June 1940. -
Supermarine Spitfire IV
About 23 copies were built and served mainly in a Reco role. See PR IV. -

About 23 copies of the Spitfire Mk IV were built and served mainly in a Reco role. -
Supermarine Spitfire LF Vb
The LF wings version is a clipped wings version for better performance at low level altitude. -

About 4000 copies of the Mk Vb were built and served since May 1941. -
Supermarins Spitfire IXc
About 5600 copies of the IX serie were built from June 1942 -
Supermarine Spitfire PR X
The Spitfire PR X appeared in spring 1944 and served untill September 1945. Only 16 were produced. -
Supermarine Spitfire XIVe
About 960 Mk XIV were built. The Mk XIV appeared in October 1943. -
Supermarine Spitfire LF XVIe (Late)
More than 1000 copies of the Mk XVI were built. -
Spitfire 21
About 120 copies of the Mk 21 were built from January 1944.
